About this commission

Gathering: New York City is an invitation, a party, a protest, a celebration of harvest, the championship game. It’s a night of storytelling and play that is part staged work, part interactive experience in collaboration with local artists and audiences.

Produced and performed by Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre (YSDT, Palestine/NYC) and directed/choreographed by Samar Haddad King with text and additional original music by King, each Gathering is a singular event that calls you to join as participant or witness in the collective action. The cast features seven international YSDT performers—from Japan, Palestine, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK, and the US—and six local artists.

جَمْعة": مدينة نيو يورك هي دعوة، حفلة، تظاهرة، احتفال حصاد، ومباريات البطولة. ليلة من الحكايات واللعب، عمل مبني على المسرح والتجربة التفاعلية بين فنانين محليين والجمهور.

العمل من إنتاج وتأدية فِرْقَة يا سمر للمسرح الراقص (فلسطين\نيويورك) إخراج وتصميم حركة سمر حداد كينج مرفق بنصوص ومقطوعات موسيقية من تأليف سمر، عرض “جَمْعة” هو حدث فريد يدعوك للانضمام الى العمل الجماعي بصفة المشارك أو الشاهد. طاقم العمل يضم سبعة راقصين دوليين أعضاء فِرْقَة يا سمر من كل من اليابان، فلسطين، تايوان، تركيا، المملكة المتحدة والولايات المتحدة ألأمريكية، و ستة راقصين محليين.

Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre (YSDT) creates invigorating performance and education programs that expand access to—and promote understanding through—the arts, rooted in the belief that art should be liberating, transformative, and accessible to all. Founded in 2005 by Samar Haddad King, YSDT has a repertoire of 30+ original works performed across NYC, regionally, and abroad in 18 countries across four continents. Director, Composer, and Writer
Samar Haddad King (she/her), Artistic/Founding Director of YSDT, graduated from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program under the tutelage of Kazuko Hirabayashi. Her work has been performed in 19 countries on four continents, with commissions throughout the US and abroad including Hong Kong Arts Festival (Hong Kong), Hubbard Street 2 (Chicago), Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival (Ramallah), The Walk/St. Ann’s Warehouse (New York), Good Chance Theatre (Marseille), and others. Awards and fellowships include the Prix des Jeunes Créateurs Palestiniens pour la Diversité des Expressions Artistiques (Palest’In & Out Festival, Paris), La Fabrique Chaillot Residency (Chaillot – Théâtre national de la Danse, Paris), The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU, and Toulmin Creator (CBA/National Sawdust, NYC). Theater and musical theater credits include Dead Are My People (Noor Theatre, NYC) and We Live in Cairo (American Repertory Theater, Boston). She is a 2023 Creative Capital Wild Futures: Art, Culture, Impact awardee for her new multidisciplinary project Radio Act.

المديرة الفنية ومؤسسة فرقة يا سمر! للمسرح الراقص الناشطة في مدينة نيويورك وفلسطين. حاصلة على تقدير إمتياز من معهد Ailey في جامعة Fordham في نيويورك حيث درست تحت إشراف مصممة الرقص كازوكو هيراباياشي.عرضت اعمالها في اكثر من 19 دولة عبر اربع قارات، أخرجت وصممت الرقص للعديد من الفرق والمهرجانات في الولايات المتحدة والعالم منها: مهرجان هونج كونج للفنون(هونج كونج)، هابرد ستريت 2 (شيكاجو)، ومهرجان رام الله للرقص المعاصر، “المسار” في /St. Ann’s Warehouse (نيويورك) وفي مسرح Good Chance (مرسيليا) وغيرهم.

حاصلة على عدد من الجوائز والزمالة والاقامات الفنية منها: جائزة الفنان الفلسطيني الشاب من مهرجان Palest’In and OUT في باريس. وعلى اقامة Chaillot - théâtre national de la Danse الفنية في باريس، وزمالة واقامة فنية من مركز الباليه والفنون (CBA) في جامعة نيويورك، وعلى لقب Toulmin Creater (CBA / National Sawdust. تعاونت سمر في عددا من الإنتاجات المسرحية والغنائيات منها : Dead Are My People (Noor Theatre ،NYC، و We Live in Cairo ، American Repertory Theatre ، بوسطن). حصلت على جائزة Creative Capital Wild Futures: الفن والثقافة والتأثير لعام 2023 عن مشروعها الجديد متعدد التخصصات Radio Act.

Audience Participation: This piece includes optional audience participation. You will be asked to remove your shoes before entering the performance space, and will receive a brown paper bag for your belongings. Please note that oranges will be used within the performance area.
